Italian Referendum - June 12th and 13th 2011
Otherwise, why would there be so many of us abroad?
Most of us love and painfully miss our country.
But hey, our economy and our politicians are such a pain.
There are loads of wrong things in the UK as well, but at least I can have a decent job and afford to get by without living off my parents.
And I appreciate all the opportunities I have been given here.
I must confess I almost lost all my hopes for the future of Italy.
Like most compatriots, I don't believe that my right to vote means anything.
Most referendums are a waste of money because less than 50%+1 people bother going and expressing their opinion.
Still, this year has been different.
In spite of what happened to Fukushima, our Government wanted to reopen the nuclear plants in Italy.
They were closed in 1990 after a referendum in 1987 when Italians already made it clear that they were against nuclear power.
There were other important issues to vote against, like the privatisation of water, but I am sure that what motivated my compatriots most was this one. So, the nuclear power project has been closed.
In your face, Berlusconi.
I've felt so proud of being Italian :)
